Featuring a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”
with English Supertitiles.
“Giannia Schicchi” is a comic opera in one act, composed by Giacomo Puccini. The story of “Gianni Schicchi” is set in Florence and is based on characters that actually existed. Puccini was inspired to compose “Gianni Schicchi” by a portion of Dante’s Inferno (Canto XXX). In this portion of Inferno, Gianni Scchicch is found in the eighth circle of hell for cheating and creating a forgery of a will.
Buoso Donati has recently died and his family is found mourning over him. As they weep, Betto, one of Buoso’s family members says he heard a rumor that Buoso left most of his wealth to a monastery. This announcement leads to a frantic search for Buoso’s will. When they find the will, the rumor is confirmed, Buoso has in fact left everything to the monastery.
In order to bypass the will, the Donati family creates a forgery of the will, with the help of Gianni Schicchi. In the new will, they divide Buoso’s wealth amongst themselves. However, when this new will is made, Gianni Schicchi ends up keeping a significant portion of Buoso’s wealth for himself.
